She was transported to Newark on the 4th of January 1945 to be shipped on the 24th of January 1945 to the 15th US Air Force in Italy. When she arrived in Italy she was assigned to the 332nd fighter group, 99th Fighter Squadron based at Ramatelli Airfield. The 332nd made their name as The Tuskegee Airmen but were also nicknamed as “The Red Tails” During her service she was assigned to Second/First Lieutenant George Hardy who flew missions over Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Unusually Tall in the Saddle has never been given an extensive rebuild, which means she has the original bullet repairs on the fuselage and puncture repairs on the tail fin. The 15th US Air Force continued deployment after VE-Day till the last airman returned to the US for demobbing in November 1945. Tall in the Saddle was shipped to mainland USA on the 10th of October 1945, where she served with a number of USAF Squadrons till 1956. In 1956 she was prepared to be shipped for service in the Korean War, but was not shipped. She was sold out of USAF service in 1957 to Whiteman Enterprises of Pacoima California for a total sum of $1,110.00. In 1981 Whiteman Enterprises was sold to Humberto Escobar of Bogota, Colombia. In 1989 she was sold and exported to Jacques Bourret of Aero Retro who operated from Saint Rambert, France. Jacques Bourret repainted her to represent “Jumpin Jacques” which was flown by Lieutenant Jacque E Young of the 3rd Fighter Squadron, 3rd Air Commando Group. She was delivered to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) with the tail number 5711 in 1942. She was initially delivered to 123rd (RCAF) Squadron at Debert before being transferred to 127th and 129th Squadrons at Dartmouth before seeing out the war at No 1 Operational Training Unit at Bagotville. In 1947 the RCAF sold her out of service to a syndicate in Saskatchewan. In 1982 Stephen Grey brought her and finished restoring her to airworthy status in 1989 with the colours of Z3781 XR-T which flew with No 71 RAF Squadron. In 2002 she was sold to Historic Aircraft Collection who restored her over an 18 month period and given the colours of Z5140 HA-C which flew as part of No 126 Sqn during the siege of Malta. She was the first Hawker Hurricane to return to Malta since the end of the war as part of the Merlins Over Malta project in September 2005. In August 2012 she made the long flight from the UK to Moscow for the Moscow Centenary Air Show. In 2015 she was repainted again for the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. This time she was given the colours of P3700 RF-E which flew with No 303 (Polish) Sqn. W5856 is currently painted to represent the Fleet Air Arms 820 Naval Air Squadron with Invasion Stripes. This Fairey Swordfish is the oldest Swordfish still in existence having first flown on the 21st of October 1941 (Trafalgar Day). Orginally serving with the Royal Navy Mediterranean Fleet before being transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1944 for use as a training aircraft till the end of the war. After the war she was sold at least two civilian pilots before being sold to Sir William Roberts as part of his Strathallen Collection. British Aerospace brought her in 1990 to restore her to flying condition before they gifted her to Navy Wings in 1993. In 1996 the City of Leeds adopted W5856 as a tribute to the local companies who helped build Swordfishs. She served with the US Air Training Command before being stored at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma with the Air Material Command after the end of the second world war. In 1952 the Rio Pact had been signed by the USA, which Nellie and other P-47Ds were assigned to the Military Assistance Program in September. Peruvian Air Force started flying her in 1953 until 1967. In 1969 Ed Jurist brought 6 Thunderbolts and 45 tons of spare parts. On the 2nd December 1971 Nellie flew again from Harlingen as part of the Commemorative Air Force in the colours the 86th Fighter Group, 527th Fighter Squadron used during the Italian campaign. In 1975 Ed Jurist retired and sold all the aircraft with his collection being split up with the formation Yesterdays Air Force (YAF). Nellie was sent to Yesterdays Air Force Kansas Wing, at Forbes Field in Topeka, in 1977 she was repainted in the colours of Col David Schilling when he flew with the 56th Fighter Group, 62nd Fighter Squadron. in 1980 she was damaged during a take off crash in Tulsa, Oklahoma She was transferred to Truckee-Tahoe airport, Nevada, where they started to rebuild her but in 1984 she was sold to The Fighter Collection with the remaining 30% of the restoration to be done by Steve Hinton’s Fighter Rebuilders in Chino, California. In August 1985 she returned to airworthiness status. After the war she was first converted to a TB-17G training aircraft before being converted again to a EB-17G testbed aircraft for experimental engine tests. 1954 she was sold off to Institut Géographique National. 1975 she moved back to England for restoration back to a Second World War B-17G. In 1981 she was in the TV series We'll Meet Again. In 1983/1984 Sally-B was painted in an olive drag & grey colour scheme to protect her from the elements better. in 1990 she was used in the film Memphis Belle, which she still retains the nose art on her other side. She was built to late for World War One service and was sent to Turkey with no 208 Squadron in 1923. In 1936 she had fallen into disrepair and was brought by Captain C.P.B. Ogilvie with the intension to restore her back to airworthy condition. Bristol Aeroplane Company took over the project, which they finished in 1952 before entrusting the aircraft to the Shuttleworth Collection. in 1980 the Shuttleworth Collection started a two year project to completely refurbish and restore the airframe and its Rolls-Royce Falcon III engine. On 24 January 1942, “Red 12” was shot down near Titovka, close to Murmansk, while engaging Soviet‑operated Hawker Hurricanes. The wreck remained in the Arctic until its rediscovery in 1993, after which it was sold to Eberhard Thiesen and shipped to Charleston Aviation Services in Great Horkesley for a full restoration. Esmond Cecil Harmsworth, 2nd Viscount Rothermere funded the original project as a small civilian airliner. In 1935 the Air ministry requested if the civilian airliner could be adapted into a bomber variant. Frank Barnwell redesigned the aircraft for use a light bomber. When the Bristol Blenheim entered RAF service it was the only aircraft with a stressed skin, hydraulic actuated undercarriage, flaps and a turret. When the Second World War broke out there was 1089 Bristol Blenheim’s making it the most common bomber in service. The Bristol Blenheim unlike the other bombers weren't switched to night operations, which led to heavy losses from anti-aircraft fire as well as newer Luftwaffe fighters, but despite of this the crews still loved the type. This Bristol was original built as a Canadian licensed built Bristol Bolingbroke MKIV in 1943. The Strathallan Collection of Scotland brought the airframe in the mid 1980s, in 1988 it was sold to the Aircraft Restoration Company for restoration to flight worthy condition, with the restoration being completed in 1993. In 2003 she was damaged in a landing crash, after the crash she was transferred to Blenheim (Duxford) Ltd During restoration it was decided to convert the airframe from the Bristol Bolingbroke MKIV to a Bristol Blenheim Mk.IF as they had a Bristol Blenheim Mk.I nose donated to them. The donated MkI nose was used after the war by Ralph Nelson who had installed it on a Austin Seven until 1957 when the car was damaged by a fire but the nose wasn't. The nose came from a Avro built Bristol Blenheim Mk.IF, which was delivered to 23 Squadron in September 1939. L6739 fought as night fighter during the Battle of Britain before being damaged in December 1940 and stuck off. She was sold in 1953 to Greenfield’s Air Taxis for £100. Between 1953 and 1990 she was used as a passenger plane, she won a pylon air race at Moorabbin in 1971. In 1990 she appeared in Half a World Away as Roscoe Turner’s Boeing 247 “Warner Bros Comet,” before going on display at Wangaratta Air World Museum. Bill Reid purchased the aircraft in 2002 and began a full Mk.I Series II restoration. In May 2024 she was acquired by RAF Station Czechoslovakia and shipped to Podhorany Airfield, flying again on 1 June. She now wears the markings of Anson K6183 VX‑B of No. 206 Squadron, lost on 5 September 1939 near the Frisian Islands. The original crew—Pilot Officer Laurie Edwards, LAC John Quilter, Sgt Alexander Heslop, and AC1 Geoffrey Sheffield—engaged a Heinkel He 115 during a reconnaissance sortie before being shot down. This Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX was built by the Vickers Armstrong's factory in Castle Bromwich on the 4th of August 1944, It was then transported to Cardiff docks and from there shipped to the Russian Air Forces 2nd Squadron of the 767th Regiment 122nd Division at Murmansk. PT879 flown by Lieutenant Grigoriy Vasilievich Semyonov crashed during a training dogfight with another spitfire on the 18th May 1945 after only, 18 hours 29 minutes of flying time. In 1997 she was discovered mostly intact and moved to Saint Petersburg where she was brought by Peter Monk who brought her back to the UK for extensive restoration which was finally completedin 2020. In 1997 it went to Duxford before being purchased by the Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society before moving into the Shuttleworth Collection in 1998. In 1999, with the aid of a donation from the family of Peter Vaughan Fowler a former pilot from 161 Squadron who flew Lysander operations during the Second World War, it was repainted in night Operations colours and with the serial V9367. A fixed ladder was also added as well as a dummy 150 gallon long range fuel tank was attached below the fuselage. This configuration the Lysander III S.D. She was delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force in July 1945 and was converted into a F-5G-6-LO Photo Recon. In 1946 she was assigned to Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) at Kingman Army Airfield who sold her to Lilee Products Company of Chicago for $1,250. In 1947 she was sold to J. D. Reed Company of Houston who repainted her as Bendix Racer Number 14 "Sky Ranger". In 1953 she was sold to Hugh Wells of Baltimore. In 1962 she was sold to Sylvan Lair & Vernon Thorpe of Yukon. In 1964 she was sold Marvin "Lefty" Gardner and Lloyd Nolan. In 1977 Marvin "Lefty" Gardner installed P-38F air intakes, modified the turbo systems and repainted her fuselage white with red wingtips, tail tips, stub wing and spinners, while the trim and nose number (25) was painted blue, later her nose number was changed to (13) in red paint. During this time she was raced as White Lightnin' by Marvin "Lefty" Gardner. She had a wheels up crash in 2001 in a field near Greenwood Airport in Mississippi while being piloted by Ladd Gardner. In 2004 Red Bull purchased her and transported her from Burnet to Ezell Aviation in Breckenridge for restoration. On the 2nd of June 2008 she had her post restoration maiden flight. Since she was restored she has a unpainted aluminum finish with American red, white and blue design on the rudders the company logo. After being issued the civil registration G-AMAU she took part in the King's Cup Air Race she took second place. In 1968 she was one of the many aircraft flown in the Battle of Britain film. She was gifted to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coltishall in 1972 by Hawker Siddeley. The BBMF repainted her in the colours of Flight Lieutenant Karel Kuttelwascher DFC of 1 Squadron based at RAF Tangmere. In 2010 she underwent restoration and maintenance where she was repainted to the colours of Flight Lieutenant Jimmy Whalen DFC of 34 Squadron, South East Asia Command. In 2020 she was given her current colours representing 247 night fighter squadron Formerly painted as code JX-E to represent "Night Reaper" flown by 1 Squadron fighter ace Flt Lt Karel Kuttelwascher DFC during night intruder operations from RAF Tangmere, In 2010 the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight began a rebuild of Hawker Hurricane PZ865 wearing a new colour scheme, faithfully replicating Hurricane Mk IIC HW840, coded ‘EG-S’, of 34 Squadron, South East Asia Command during 1944, the personal aircraft of Canadian pilot, Flight Lieutenant Jimmy Whalen DFC.
